Antoinette Plaia Tipton, age 86, of Birmingham, AL peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at East Glen Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Tipton was a native and life long resident of Alabama where she lived most of her life in the areas of Ensley, Midfield, and Hoover. She was a long time member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and later of St. Peters Catholic Church. She had been a resident of St. Martins in the Pines where she enjoyed the friendship of many staff and fellow residents as well as the fellowship of St. Francis Xavier priests and pastoral care ministers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Melvin Tipton, Jr. , her parents, Joseph and Josephine Costa Plaia; her brother, Arthur Plaia and nephew Jay Plaia.
She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Tipton Lawrence, her son Art Tipton (Katie), her granddaughter, Lauren Lawrence Taylor (Jacob) and great granddaughter Ava Marie Lawrence; sister in law, Lena Poureiau Plaia; nephews, Dale Plaia, Gary Plaia (Marlene), niece Debbie Plaia Collins (Rick) and devoted cousins Vivian LaRocca Melof (John) and a host of other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 6-8 P.M. followed by a Vigil at 8 P.M. at St. Francis Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, AL, 35213. Funeral service will he held on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Sullivan officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A. M. at St. Francis Catholic Church with a mass at 10:00 A. M. Burial will be in Valhalla Cemetery in Midfield, AL.
