Obituary

Bernice Russell Herring passed away peacefully on November 23, 2014 in High Point, NC at the age of 96.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Brenda Bell of High Point, NC, son, Terry Herring and wife Martha of Pleasant Grove, AL, grandchildren David Lovett of Pleasant Grove, AL, Lori Lovett of Thomasville, NC, Scott Herring and Matthew Herring of Pleasant Grove, AL, great-grandchildren Kinsley Idol and Laurel Idol of NC, Taylor Lovett of AL and sister Betty Higdon of Bessemer, AL. Bernice is preceded in death by husband G.C. "Pete" Herring, parents Guy and Lou Russell, sisters Ethel Ford, Sadie Hardin, Jesse Armstrong, Earline Mize, and brothers Fred Russell and Guy Russell.

Bernice was born on May 1, 1918 in Sevierville, TN to Guy Russell and Lou Rogers Russell. She graduated from University of Alabama Hospital School of Nursing in 1964 with a degree in Applied Sciences and practiced as a Registered Nurse for over 33 years. She retired from the nursing profession at Bessemer Carraway Hospital in 1997. She married G.C. "Pete" Herring in 1935 and celebrated 63 years of marriage. Her family remembers her as one who loved and served her Lord Jesus Christ, loved her family and always offered a smile and words of encouragement. She was a longtime, dedicated member and Sunday school teacher at Parkwood Church of God in Bessemer, AL and later transferred her membership to High Point Church of God, in High Point, NC.

Bernice was a generous and dedicated lady who loved her church family and who was passionate about serving the Lord, her church and community. She believed in always helping and ministering to those in need.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 1, 2014 at 12 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home with Chaplin LaVaughn Jarvis officiating. Interment will follow in Valhalla Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Chapel at Valhalla Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkwood Church of God 1975 HWY 150 SE Bessemer, AL 35020. Online condolences may be sent to www.valhallafuneralhome.com.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Westchester Manor in High Point, NC for their love, care, and dedication in caring for Bernice.
