Mrs. Bernice L. McGhee, a resident of Birmingham, Alabama, peacefully departed from her earthly home on June 26th, 2024, at the age of 84, to live eternally in the presence of God. Valhalla Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11th at Valhalla Funeral Home from 10 am to 2 pm. A celebration of her life will commence at 11 am on Friday, July 12th, 2024, at West End Hills Missionary Baptist Church, followed by interment at Valhalla Cemetery in Midfield, Alabama. The service will be officiated by Pastor Dennis L. Brown.
Born on March 14, 1940, in Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. Bernice L. McGhee was one of ten children born to the late Jack and Mary Lipscomb. She attended A.J. Parker High School and later married Mr. Clyde McGhee, with whom she raised five children. In the 1970s, Bernice and her family relocated to Boston.
During her time in Boston, Bernice embarked on a lengthy career with Bank of America, retiring after many years of dedicated service. She was an active member of St. John Baptist Church and Morning Star Church. Renowned for her culinary talents, Bernice's cooking was cherished by all fortunate enough to taste it, spanning admiration from north to south. She possessed a fervor for aiding others, taking immense pride in her appearance and personal style. Bernice held a fondness for 1960s television shows and movies, particularly Star Trek, and enjoyed exercising alongside Richard Simmons.
In the 1990s, Bernice returned to Birmingham to care for several beloved family members, including her mother, sister, and brother. She became a devoted member of West End Missionary Baptist Church, the same congregation her mother had joined.
Survived by her sons Clyde McGhee and Courtney McGhee, her daughter; Shewanda McGhee, numerous grandchildren including Aiya, Trevaugh, Shamara, Ajwoan, Arshay, Winston, Brandon, Chloe, Larmont, Quandre, Yah Yah, Courtney Jr., and other grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends,
Mrs. Bernice McGhee was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Mary Lipscomb, two daughters; Yolanda McGhee and Letita McGhee, and her siblings.
