Carolyn Lowery Edwards "Mimi", 91, of Bessemer, Alabama, passed away February I7, 2025.The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 24, 2025 at 11:00am at Valhalla Funeral Home with burial to follow at Valhalla Cemetery. Visitation will be held before the service at 10:00am.
Carolyn was born November 11, 1933 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to James G. Lowery, Sr. and Leota Shirley Lowery. At a young age, her family moved to Bessemer where she attended school and graduated from Bessemer High School in 1951. She was married to Cary A.Edwards on December 30, 1951. They were married 30 years.
Carolyn is survived by her daughters Elizabeth E. Shields (Bobby), Perri E. Southerland, and Stacey E. Bennett (Clinton), grandchildren, Barbara V. Edwards, Kyle A. Edwards, Michelle S. Ray (Alex), Sarah C. Southerland, Cary J. Southerland (Bailey), Victoria B. Guidry (Jeffrey), Caroline E. Bennett (TJ), great-grandchildren Alexis L. Ray, Anna J. Ray, Ari W. Ray, Hope E. Southerland and Baby Guidry, brother, James G. Lowery Il (Lynda, d), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, James G. Lowery, Sr. and Leota S. Lowery, husband, Cary A. Edwards, sons, C. Owen Edwards (Peggy) and William L. Edwards, sisters Margaret L. Salter (Herbert, d), Jean L. Bramlett (Mutt, d), and Barbara L. Statham (Vernon, d).
Carolyn was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bessemer, AL and then Shephard of the Valley Presbyterian Church. In her younger years she was very active in Presbyterian Women, the Hospitality Committee and many VBSs and Bible studies. Carolyn was known as Mimi to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and those she would claim as grandchildren. She loved playing games, especially cards. You always wanted to be her partner because she won.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Shephard of the Valley Presbyterian Church, McCalla, AL and the Presbyterian Home for Children, Talladega, AL. The family wants to thank Mary Finley, her caregiver and Aveanna Hospice, Montgomery, AL for their loving care and support during her illness.
