Davis, Clarence Oliver (Chief) was born on March 16, 1919, passed away on February 29, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Ann, his son, Donald Lee Davis and granddaughter Beverly Christian, his parents, Annie and Willie Davis, and his brother James. He is survived by his children Sandra Fancher (Peck), Kay Suddeth (Olan) and William Charles (Danny) Davis, daughter-in-law Em Davis, his brothers Earnest and William J. Davis, close friend and training partner Billy Rhodes, 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1945, and joined the Bessemer Fire Department in 1950. He rose through the ranks to become Bessemer's fire chief from 1956 to 1974, and during his time as chief, he oversaw the growth of the department from a single outdated building to four modern fire stations. He retired early and for the next thirty plus years, he throughly enjoyed himself buying and selling anything that caught his interest from property to vehicles to a fire truck which he donated to a fire museum. The family would like to thank the Community Hospice, especially Jenny Huett and Elizabeth Botto for their loving care during his last short illness. Funeral Services will be held at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, March 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. with burial in Valhalla cemetery. Rev. Fritz Harder officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2008 from 6 until 8.
