Obituary

Floyd Alvin "Big Soup" Gilliland passed away quietly on August 22, 2013 at the age of 93. He was born May 12, 1920 in Sulligent, Alabama and moved to Birmingham in 1941 where he worked as a butcher for Wilson Meat Packing Company. Then at Alpha Portland Cement Company in Midfield for twenty-nine years until the company closed in 1980 and he retired. He was a member of the New Faith Baptist Church in Pleasant Grove.

Floyd Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie and William Taft Gilliland; his wife, Grace Elizabeth Pickle Gilliland and his brothers, Roy, Troy, Lloyd, and Coy Gilliland. He is survived by his only son, Floyd Edgar Gilliland (Patricia); three grandchildren, Floyd Shayne Gilliland (Courtney), Terri Juanice Gilliland Wilkerson (Bobby Ray,Sr.) and Chad Travis Gilliland(Marsha); also including many great grandchildren.

There will be the receiving of family and friends for services at Valhalla Funeral Home on Monday, August 26, 2013 on Bessemer Super Highway from 10-11 A.M. with the service to follow at 11:00 A.M. The deceased will then be transported for burial for graveside services at the Wesley Chapel Detroit in Sulligent, AL; to be interred next to his loving wife, Grace, of thirty-three years of marriage. "Back Home At Last."
