Gordon Silvey Hallmark, 91, of Birmingham, AL went to be with the Lord March 20, 2017, while resting peacefully at home with family members by his side.
Gordon was born in Etowah County, Alabama, on December 28, 1925 to Minnie Davidson Hallmark and William Thomas Hallmark. Gordon graduated from Hueytown High School in 1943. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was commissioned out of the Navy in 1946 after World War II. He married Catherine Jeanette Clardy on July 26, 1947, and they were blessed with four children, Alan, Patricia, Kimberly, and Henry Lee. In 1949 he moved to Palacka, FL and later to Port St. Joe, FL where he worked for O.M Webb. He and his family lived there for 10 years, opened Hallmark''s Department Store, was a member of Port St. Joe Methodist Church, and an active community leader. In 1960 he and his family relocated to Birmingham, AL, where he became well-known in the retail business for opening and managing Yeilding''s and Black''s department store branches.
Gordon lived his life filled with love and devotion to God, family, and country. He loved gardening, listening to Glenn Miller and other music from his era, but most of all, he loved spending time with family and trips with his grandchildren. He enjoyed life to the fullest and always greeted everyone he met with, "How are you this most beautiful day?" He had a zest for life and the drive to serve others.
Gordon is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Catherine Hallmark, and children, Alan Hallmark of Birmingham, AL, Patricia Downing and husband Tom of Anniston, AL, Kimberly Baumgartner and husband Kyle of Andalusia, AL, and Harry Lee Smith and wife Bonnie of Port St. Joe, FL. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Thomas Downing, Robert Downing and wife Lori, Ashley Enochs and husband Bill, Sydney Baumgartner, Mia Baumgartner and three great grandchildren, Katelyn Downing, Collin Downing and Benjamin Enochs. He was preceded by his brothers Eston Hallmark, William Hallmark and sister Mable Manar.
A funeral service will be held on March 23rd at 1:30 P.M. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church, 733 Valley Street, Hoover AL 35226 where Gordon has been a member for 53 years, with family receiving friends 12:00 to 1:30 P.M. and immediately following will be a graveside service for family at Valhalla Cemetery.
