Scarbrough, Hilda Ferne Hyche , age 88, of Rock Creek, AL, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, daughter of the late Henry Myers Hyche and Martha Emma Waldrop Hyche. She was a graduate of Hueytown High School. She was married for 55 years to the late Rayford Willard Scarbrough. During World War II, they lived in Norfolk, Virginia. Before moving to Rock Creek, they lived in Bessemer and were members of Broadmoor Baptist Church. For most of her life, she was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Women's Missionary Union and the Joy Group. She was church pianist and organist for over 30 years. She retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education after more than 30 years of service. She was the longtime registrar at Pittman Junior High School in Hueytown. She held the same position at McNeil Junior High School and Concord Elementary School. She was talented at music, as well as knitting, quilting and arts/crafts. She is survived by son, Rayford Lyn Scarbrough (Cindy) of Birmingham; three grandsons, Bradley Lyn Scarbrough, Shannon Lane Scarbrough (Michelle) and Christopher Lee Poole (Shannon); granddaughter, Alexandra Diane Poole; brother, Fred Milton Hyche; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Harlan, Newell, Carl, Palma, Macon and Frank, Sr.; and granddaughter, Stephanie Lea Scarbrough. Funeral services Friday, October 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home with burial in Valhalla cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home.
