age 82, of Bessemer, passed away peacefully at home March 1, 2010. He was a man steadfastly dedicated to his family, his country and his faith. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Japanese Theatre. He has been an active member and deacon of New Hope Baptist Church where he was known for his quick wit and faithful use of his gift of encouragement. After retiring from thiry-three years with the Bessemer Housing Authority he spent many years enjoying the fishing and fellowship at his favorite campsite on Chilatchee Creek. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Kathryn Chambers DeMott; his children, Ben DeMott (Paula), Wanda Thompson (Mike), Charles E. DeMott (Cindy), Candy Porter (Kirk); ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and sisters, Wilma Bowdoin, Billie Jean Bice (Bill) and several nieces and nephews. He often said "I'm the most blessed man that I know" but in truth we were the most blessed for knowing him. Our loss is his gain, as he goes home to be with the Lord. Funeral Services will be Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Valhalla Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made either to the Gideons or New Hope Baptist Church 7907 Bluff Ridge Road Bessemer, AL 35022.
