Lula B. King was born on July 26, 1940 to McDuff Williams and Leatha Thomas Williams in Boligee, AL. She later moved to Birmingham, AL where she met her late husband James King Jr. Together they raised two beautiful children, Elisha and Audrey.
She was a faithful member of the Broad Street Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Solomon Crenshaw Sr., where she served as the head of the Nurses Guild, a member of the #1 Choir and an advisor of the youth and young adult department. Lula was a proud member of the Order of Eastern Star, Scarlet Chapter Number 7.
She is preceded in death by her late husband James King Jr, son Elisha Kendrick Jr., three sisters Hannah Smith Miles, Carrie Henderson, Rosa Brown, and one brother, I.C. Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters Audrey King-Sales (Tyrone), Janethia Hardy; daughter-in-law Sharon Kendrick; sister Mamie Duncan. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Lula was the cornerstone of her family, always generous in love and wisdom. To those who knew her, she was equally fiery and funny, sweet and sassy, and she was a shining example of what a woman should be. Lula was the epitome of class and poise, and expected kindness from those she loved, mirroring her own excellent character. Lula was a prayer warrior and could always be depended on in hard times to remind others who Christ is and the miraculous power He has. She leaned on the 23rd Psalm, leading others to turn to Jesus, whom she loved and represented well.
She wasn't just a fisher of men for Christ, she enjoyed fishing at local lakes and would fry up that fish and host Sunday dinner for her family. She was affectionately nicknamed "Honey," a name appropriately given, as Lula made everyone feel like family, even when she poked fun over a good game of spades.
Lula passed away on January 28, 2023 at the age of 83, in her home, surrounded by the people she poured so much love into.
