Dunn, Martha Jo Bowers, age 64 of Hoover, AL, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, after a 16-year battle with cancer. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Rowe and Nettie Bowers of Damascus, Alabama. She graduated from Elba High School in 1962 and attended Troy State University. She received a Masters degree in Education from the University of Alabama. She taught English, Business Mathematics and Typing at the high school and collegiate levels. She began serving the Lord in music as a child in Damascus Baptist Church and was the organist for First Baptist Church of Hoover for over 20 years through the time of her passing. She also played piano and taught music for Children's Dance Foundation and Cathedral Day Care. Previously, she had blessed her family, church and friends with a host of other talents including teaching, singing, painting, and sewing. She passionately enjoyed hearing, singing and playing Southern Gospel music in church and at home. Martha is survived by husband Larry, son Steven, sister Merita Shutt, niece Wanda Brown, nephews Chris and Tim Watson, cousin Danny Vaughn, and daughter-in-law Yevgeniya Dunn. There will be a visitation at 9:00 AM followed by funeral services to be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at First Baptist Church of Hoover, 2025 Patton Chapel Road, Birmingham, AL 35216, with a graveside service to follow in her childhood hometown of Damascus at the Damascus Baptist Church cemetery, 774 County Road 547, Damascus, AL 36323.
