Mary Lee Monroe, 73, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama. She was born Mary Lee Hill on August 15, 1943, in New York City. During her childhood, she moved to Homewood, Alabama, and graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1961. She attended nursing school at Carraway School of Nursing, and received her RN license. Mary Lee worked at several hospitals and a pediatrician''s office before finally returning to Birmingham in 1978 where she gained employment at Brookwood Hospital as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. She remained at Brookwood until retirement in 2013, having spent 49 years as a nurse. Along the way, she met her husband Don Monroe to whom she was married for 47 years. The union produced two children, Kim and Scott.
Mary Lee enjoyed many things in life, mainly her numerous grandchildren and Alabama football. She also relished vacationing at the beach, and made it a point to travel to the coast several times a year. She was active in her church, Bluff Park United Methodist, and had many friends in her Fisherman Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed attending and volunteering with The Shephard Center at her church.
Mary Lee was preceded in death by her father, Ben Hill, her husband, Don Monroe, and her daughter, Kim Barfield. She is survived by her son, Scott Monroe (Linda), her mother, Martene Hill, her brother, Denny Hill (Alice), her son-in-law, Jay Barfield, her grandchildren, Mary Katherine Barfield, Marshall Barfield, Rebekah Barfield, LeeAnna Barfield, Benjamin Barfield, Daniel Barfield, Michael Lawson, and Sarah Knight, as well as four great grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mary Lee will be Friday, August 11, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Valhalla Cemetery in Birmingham. The family will receive friends Friday, August 11, 2017 from noon until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service.
