Obituary

Melba June Thompson Shields, age 98,  of Pleasant Grove, AL   passed away peacefully on  May 25, 2022.  Melba was born in Hokes Bluff, Alabama to the late Jesse F. and Alma Thompson. She was affectionately known as June, Junebug, Granny, and Granby.  June was a graduate of Hokes Bluff High school. At 18, she was employed by the FBI in Washington, DC during WWII. She worked in the mailroom and had the honor of delivering mail to  President J. Edgar Hoover. She also had the honor to purchase candy for the FBI agents during stakeouts.  June later moved back to Alabama and started another career at Sears Roebuck in Birmingham. She was employed for 37+ years. She was the oldest member of the Sears Retiree Club and was responsible for calling other younger members to remind them of their monthly meetings. June was a loving and devoted woman to her family and friends. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

June was preceded in death by the love of her life for 63 years, Wesley A. Shields; daughter,   Jackie Shepard; granddaughter, Erin Carole Gentry; parents; sister, Ethel Barker & 3 brothers.

Those left to cherish her memories are her sister, Barbara Martin; daughter, Deborah Gentry (Barry); granddaughters, Amber Parsons (Brad), Allison Irvin, Kelsey Crenshaw (David), Haley Thompson ( Josh); great-grandchildren, Taylor, Bradley, Owen, Eli, Jackson, Dalton, Pearl, Beau and Natalie; four nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Special thanks to her 5:30PM phone call friend as well as all of her carers who made her final years so bright. The family will receive friends Friday, May 27, 2022, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Valhalla Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2 pm.

Pallbearers are Brad Parsons, Paul Burdette, David Carroll, Wesley Crenshaw, Jackson Irvin, and Andrew Crenshaw.  Honorary Pallbearers are Owen Parsons, Dalton Irvin, and Eli Irvin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to  UAB Palliative and Supportive Care Department of Medicine Development Office 1808 7th ave S BDB 420, Birmingham AL 35223.
