Obituary

Michael C. Rockett, Sr., met his Savior face to face on January 4, 2025. A man deeply loved and respected by all who knew him, he was known by many nicknames throughout his life: "Mickey", "Pig","SkyRockett", and "Chief". His legacy of love, faith, and humor leaves an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Born on December 15, 1940, to Alta Mae and John Rockett, Mickey grew up alongside his older brother, Johnny Rockett. A proud graduate of Bessemer High School, Mickey soon married his high school sweetheart, Sandy Padalino, building a beautiful life together and raising their son, Mike Rockett.

Mickey began his professional journey at U.S. Steel Corporation, where he met his lifelong friend Ned Speer and retired after a dedicated career. He later contributed his expertise to several other companies and briefly owned Production Patterns.

Faith was the cornerstone of Mickey's life. For 55 years, he attended South Highland Baptist Church and faithfully served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He and Sandy later joined Hunter Street Baptist Church, where Mickey spent 25 years leading a beloved Small Group class. He found great joy in participating in church dramas and plays, often lending his rich voice as a narrator. An avid sports enthusiast. Mickey also enjoyed playing Church volleyball, and softball, where he was known as a excellent pitcher.

Spending time with friends was one of the joys of Mickey's life. Whether gathered around a table sharing stories and laughter, embarking on camping and RV adventures that created cherished memories, or discussing current events over CB radio, Mickey valued the bonds of friendship deeply. For many of his friends and their loved ones, Mickey became a beloved surrogate family member, stepping in for Grandparents' Days and other occasions when relatives couldn't be there. His boundless heart embraced everyone, always finding room for more, and his presence made people feel genuinely valued and deeply cared for.

A lifelong Alabama Crimson Tide fan, Mickey reveled in the camaraderie of game days. From tailgating and attending games during his younger years to cheering alongside the Whites and Freemans from home in later years, his enthusiasm for his team was infectious. He never missed an opportunity to share a spirited "Roll Tide!"

One of Mickey's most cherished roles was as a coach. Whether mentoring his son, Mike, or other young athletes in baseball and PeeWee football, Mickey poured his heart into fostering their growth and enthusiasm for sports and kept in touch with his former players as they grew and started their own families.

Above all, Mickey's greatest joy was his family. He adored his two granddaughters, Meagan and Emily, taking pride in their accomplishments and cherishing every moment spent together, especially during the holidays. He also delighted in the company of his great-grandchildren, Olivia and Avery, whose laughter and love brightened his days.

Mickey is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Sandy Padalino Rockett; his son, Mike Rockett (Kellie); granddaughters Meagan Cochran (Nick) and Emily Rockett; great-grandchildren Olivia and Avery Cochran; and his faithful companion, his beloved dog, Cuddles.

The family will hold a private burial service. A celebration of Mickey's life will take place at the Hunter Street Baptist Church Chapel at 3:00 on January 9, 2025 with visitation beginning at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the HudsonAlpha Memory and Mobility Fund to support dementia research: https://donate.hudsonalpha.org/give/389730.
