Burton, Raymond E. "Gene", age 84, of Birmingham, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2009 after a brief illness. He was a member of Church of the Highlands. A graduate of Hueytown High School and the University of Alabama. He was the managing partner of Burton, Canaday and Moore CPA firm for 25 years. He served 4 years in the US Navy during WWII aboard the Aircraft carrier USS Fanshaw Bay and fought in the battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest battle in Navy history in the South Pacific. He served in various activities. He was a member and president of the National Association of Accountants, served on the National Board of Directors of Steuart, Cameron, McCloud Society, on the Alabama Board of CPA's, American Institute of CPA's. He was President of the National Management Association. Served on the Alabama Board of Public Accountants. He was President of the Toastmasters Club, member of the Quarterback Club and President of the Young Mens Club. Treasurer of Board of Directors of Mainsale Condominiums in Destin FL. On the Board of Directors at Rush Hospital in Meridian MS. He was a member of The Club and Aero Club. He is preceded in death by his loving parents Raymond and Myrtle Burton of Hueytown. He is survived by his dedicated and devoted wife of 60 years Mary Nell Marsh Burton; two loving daughters, Marsha Beth Burton Clark and Julie Ann Burton Mott; two special grand daughters, Brittany Genell Clark and Taylor Burton Mott; grandson Jonathan Lee Clark; sister-in-law, Claire Marsh of Bradenton FL; nieces, Vicki Covington, Jan King and Haden Marsh and nephew David Marsh; a host of cousins and other loving family members. Funeral services will be Monday, July 27, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Valhalla Funeral Chapel with burial in Valhalla Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Rev. Royce Ballard officiating. The family wants to extend a special thanks to Margie and Carlton Moore, Jim Cooper and Roger Tubbs.
