Roger Leonard Mathews, age 79 of Adger passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at the home he and his wife built and lived most of his life there.

Mr. Mathews was a native and life long resident of Jefferson County where he was a retired mechanic with 45 years of service at Rogers Auto Repair that he owned and operated. He was an avid dune buggy and go cart enthusiast and won the Southeast Open Weight Championship in his early life. He also was an avid motorcyclist from his early life until his recent illness. He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and presently was a member of Bible Comes to Life Church in Adger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; a son, Randy; parents; Eudora and Rogers Mathews; sisters; Barbara Parks, Janice Hardin, brother; Gordon.

He is survived by his sons; Rodgers (Darla), Greg (Lisa), and Scotty Mathews; grandchildren; Nickolas, Cory (Sara Beth), MeLisa (Nick), Kelly (Chris), Kyle (Claire), Brandy Findley (Mark), Debra Hancock, Jason, Jodie Yarbrough;17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sisters; Martha Morgan, Brenda Canada (James), Sue Carter, and Edna Bamberg (Cecil); brothers; Donnie, Glenn (Sherry), and Billy (Kathy) Mathews; numerous nieces and nephews; and life long best friend, Rusty Lockhart.

Services will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Bible Comes To Life Church, 7258 Johns Road, Adger, AL 35006. Burial will follow in Valhalla Cemetery, but there will not be a graveside committal service due to weather damage on Frday. The family will receive friends before the funeral from noon until 2 p.m. at Bible Comes to Life Church.
