Thomas Ben Garner Jr., a long-time resident of Vestavia Hills, passed away at Mount Royal Towers on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the age of 93.
Ben was a member of Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church and the Unity Sunday School class.
After serving his country as an Army veteran in World War II, Ben returned to Birmingham and worked at U.S. Steel Corporation for more than 40 years. After several years of retirement, he joined the law firm of Burr & Forman as Personnel Manager and retired from there several years later.
Preceeded in death by his parents, Thomas B. Garner, Sr.and Amanda Jane Garner; his brothers Edward Gray Garner, Sr., James Brack Garner, and Alan Garner; his sisters Florence Terry, Mable McCrary, Sula Jones, and Ervil Harvell.
He is survived by nieces Faye Gardner, Barbara Orr, and Carolyn Bullard (Walt), and a number of great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was a wonderful encouraging and supportive uncle whose wit and wisdom will be passed on for generations.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 9, at Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2:30. Graveside services will be Monday, March 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Valhalla Cemetery.
