Thomas C. McCarthy

Thomas C. McCarthy of Birmingham, AL, passed away August 1, 2015, at the age of 77.
He was born Dec. 17, 1937, to John J. and Irene Bridge McCarthy of Turtle Creek, PA. He was a graduate of Turtle Creek High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps aboard the U.S.S. Iowa and U.S.S. Forrestal. After serving his country, Mr. McCarthy received an Associates Degree in Metallurgy at Erie County Technical School in Erie, PA. He worked for U.S. Steel in Youngstown, Ohio, and Chicago, IL, before moving to Birmingham where he was plant manager for Acme Packaging in Leeds until retirement.
Mr. McCarthy was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Irene McCarthy, his brother John F. McCarthy, his wife Barbara Patton McCarthy, and grandson Houston Mahaffey. He is survived by his sisters Gerry Churley (Al) and Pat Atkins (Jim); his son Christopher McCarthy (Kathy); his step-children Gary Mahaffey (Stacey), Lisa Mahaffey (Paul McClain), Mark Mahaffey, and Michael Mahaffey (Kris); his grandchildren Handey Oddo (Nathan), Ben Mahaffey (Lindsey), Chase Mahaffey, Cody Mahaffey, Madison Mahaffey, Bragen Mahaffey, and Zachery Shoemaker; his great-grandchildren Ellie and Marisa Oddo; and many friends.
The family wishes to thank his caregiver and friend Mary Beth Weaver who lovingly cared for Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy over the past few years.
After a family memorial, Mr. McCarthy will be buried with his wife Barbara at Valhalla Cemetery in Midfield, Alabama.
