Obituary

CHEATHAM, W.E. "BILL" JR., of Hueytown, passed away on August 8, 2009 Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Valhalla Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Valhalla Cemetery. He was born May 3, 1923 in Fort Deposit. After graduating from Bessemer High School, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as an airplane mechanic. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1949 and worked 38 years as a civil engineer with Ingalls Iron Works in Birmingham. He was a member of Hueytown First United Methodist Church, the Hueytown Lions Club, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, and a volunteer with The American Heart Association and Meals on Wheels. He was an Auburn University Golden Eagle. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Belle Webb Cheatham; children, Laura McKee (Blair) Harlin and Jane Megginson; grandchildren, Joey (Mary) Harlin, Meredith (Gavin) Adams, Trice (Laura) Megginson, Chris Megginson; granddaughter-to-be, Nancy Ivey; great-grandchildren, Adam and Luke Harlin, Tyler Adams and Benjamin Megginson; sister, Laura Jean (Jack) Phillips; brother, Joe (Barbara) Cheatham; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.E. and Velma Cheatham; brother, Arthur Cheatham; sisters, Virginia Cheatham and Jewel Coggin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hueytown First United Methodist Church or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
