William Benson Kughn, Jr.

William Benson Kughn, Jr., age 92, of McCalla, AL formerly of Anniston, entered this life on August 14, 1923 and entered into eternal life on March 26, 2016.

A native of Mexia, Texas, Mr. Kughn was a long time minister of Central Church of Christ in Anniston and served with Churches of Christ in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, and Ohio.

Mr. Kughn graduated high school in Olla, Louisiana where he met the love of his life, Louise Reitzell Kughn. He attended Northeast Junior College (LSU) and Abilene Christian College. After their wedding ceremony they boarded a bus the same night to begin his first ministry with the El Campo Church of Christ and also taught High School in El Campo, Texas. He moved his family to Anniston in 1953 to work with the Central Church of Christ until 1960 where he worked with the Central Church of Christ in Gadsden for two years. In 1962 he returned to Anniston working with the Central Church of Christ until 1974 when he moved to Gallipolis, Ohio and worked with the Chapel Hill Church of Christ for nineteen years. He and his wife returned to Anniston to retire. He worked with the Colvin Street Church of Christ in 1997 until 2004 when he began his last ministry at the Greenbrier Church of Christ serving as Educational Director and the Senior Citizen Minister until 2011. Due to declining health, he and his wife moved to Birmingham in 2011 to live with their son, Barry J. Kughn, and were members of the Palisade''s Church of Christ in Homewood.

During his younger years, he served as director of Alabama Christian Youth Camp for sixteen years. He was active and served as president of the PTA at Anniston High School and was active with the AHS Band Boosters. Mr. Kughn took an active part in the Anniston City School System in numerous areas and organizations concerning the change in textbooks on math, history and the teaching of evolution. He was very active in speaking for gospel meetings in various parts of the United States He was well known for his writings for many religious organizations .He held radio broadcasts in every area that he served as minister.

He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy years, Louise Reitzell Kughn (former Ms. Senior Calhoun County); his parents W. B. Kughn, Sr. and Jewel Kughn Ethrington; his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mr. Kughn is survived by two sons; Kenneth E. Kughn (Teresa) of Louisiana and Barry J. Kughn of McCalla, AL; four grandchildren and their spouses; Jeremy Kughn (Jennifer), Jonathan T. Kughn (Amanda), Brianne Kughn Hendrick (Lance), and Ashley Kughn Rowell (Brian); seven great grandchildren; Taylor Kughn, Tanner Kughn, Connor Kughn, Jayden Hendrick, Abbey Grace Kughn, Austin Hendrick, Brian Rowell, Jr., and Tyler Kughn; a sister, Juanita Kughn Wilson; caregivers, Caroline Chamberlain (Laci); Lillie Cash, and Jay Wright; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews and numerous great great nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 3:00 P.M. at the Greenbrier Church of Christ, 3425 Greenbrier Dear Rd, Anniston, Al 36207 with Jeremy Kughn, Jonathan Kughn, Lance Hendrick, and Jim Harrington officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the Church foyer of Greenbrier Church of Christ where the family will receive friends. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery with no committal or graveside service.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Kughn, Jonathan Kughn, Tanner Kughn, Lance Hendrick, Eric Turner, and Jay Wright.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to assist the family in medical and sitting expenses incurred for Mr. Kughn. Send donations marked for Kughn Memorial Fund, c/o Barry J. Kughn, 13059 Olmsted Circle, McCalla, AL 35111.
